Why do the airlines make us shut off our Cell phones in flight?
Is it just to keep people from yakking on their phones? I don’t believe that it interferes with the electronics. I flew aircraft for 18 years. There are a lot of other things jamming the airwaves besides cell phones.

Using cell phones in flight is prohibited by FCC regulations. Even if the airlines wanted to let you use your phones, they couldn’t, because they cannot override this FCC regulation.
It’s true that cell phones generally have no effect on aircraft systems. And the FCC forbids their use in flight because it worries about the load on the cell network, not because it worries about their effect on the aircraft.
The FAA does not specifically prohibit the use of cell phones, and it hasn’t really looked into it. FAA regulations merely say that airlines must not permit the use of personal electronic devices in flight unless they have determined that the devices do not interfere with aircraft systems. Most airlines don’t want to go to the trouble of doing that, so they just prohibit electronic devices in flight—although airlines don’t actually follow the regulations to the letter, nor does the FAA enforce them to the letter.
2 points
so you cant signal in when to set off the bomb you terrorist!
the signal will take away from the aircrafts
because supposedly if you like text or something it might interfear with the plane or something like that..
Because the pilots use radio bands to communicate with the towers, giving them signals whether they can take off or if there is a problem. Cell phones can interrupt this radio bands to the point that you can’t barely hear it.
That’s why they ask you to turn them off.
Same as hospitals I guess, the hospital where I live had a ban on them for interference reasons, however, they have now admitted that they do nothing untoward to there systems, and have dedicated areas we can use the phones where it will not upset others.
because they dont want it to distract or mess up anything concerning the plane. you have to remember, your life is hunders of thousands of feet in the air, they are trying to keep you alive by all means neccessary.
Exactly. "They" say it will cause problems with the aircraft electronics – however aircraft and their electronics have sufficient shielding to prevent such issues. Myth Busters did a test on the claim and it yielded no problems to aircraft instruments.
it has nutting to do wit airways its cus u wont get connection and they dont want everyone on the plane scream trying to talk to someone, but resently they have found a way to make internet possible on planes so u can always talk to people on IM and other things like that but i doubt they want u to use ur webcam because of everyone else around u
Required by both FAA and FCC regulations.
Well you don’t believe the reason the FAA gives? They have probably done the most research into this so really, what can I say?
A cell phone is very close to the plane’s other electronics. Because of how close it is, it is relatively powerful to those instruments. I have certainly read anecdotal accounts of cell phones interefering with automated landers and such.
It will interfere with the frequencies that pilots use to contact ATC and Control Towers!!! If they were on, an incident like the Tenerife crash in the 70’s would happen!!!
actually its just a stupid rule. a group called the mythbusters proved that the cell phone frequency has nuthin to do with the plane. it more has to do with distracting customers
