Just like my regular land line telephone, can any cell phone be bought and then activated with service from any phone company? If not, how do people know what phones to look at if they want to go with a special phone company?

Because I barely talk on cell phones, I text text text, lol.. So I was wondering if any company had any cell phones that are prepaid , plus free texting?
I don’t care what company it is, I don’t care at all.

I’ve been trying to do my homework, and unfortunately the cell phones that look really cool with the best features are not usable where I live. verizon seems to have the coolest, with T-mobile next. I can get an iphone here, but the others seem better. Unfortunately, no coverage here for either company. Why can’t you just pick a phone you like and it work with a different company?
